About

It is a perennial plant of the Cucurbitaceae family, its stems are broadly ground or ivy and ascending. The fruit is similar to the ordinary watermelon fruit, but small and often round, about the size of an orange with a different green or yellow color. The skin of the fruit is thin and hard and the kernel inside is white, which contains several oval white seeds, like ordinary watermelon seeds, but smaller than that. This plant grows in warm areas in the mountains and sandy deserts of Asia, North Africa, India, Iraq and Shamat and in different parts of Iran. This plant is mostly grown wildly and is sometimes planted by farmers.

Chemical Constituents

The fruit contains a number of bitter principles generally known as cucurbitacins consisting of a-elaterin (cucurbitacin E), elatericin B (cucurbitacin I), dihydroelatericin B (cucurbitacin L), citrullin, citrullene, citrullic acid and citrullol. Also present are sugars (glucose), pectin, hydrocarbons such as hentriacontane, a volatile oil consisting of citronellal, methyl eugenol and methyl heptenone, choline, alkaloids, lanosterol and bsitosterol. Seeds yield a bitter oil consisting of linoleic (60%), oleic (20%) and palmitic (10%) acids and a triterpene, citrullonol.
