About

It is a plant of the Labiatae or Menthaceae family, herbaceous and perennial, that looks like wild oregano. It has numerous aerial stems, thick, short and creeping, and brown in the wooden base and green and soft in the upper part. The stem is 20 to 50 centimeters long and has a root with wood fibers. The leaves are gray-green and very small, oval in shape, hairy in most species, and hairless in the wild species, with an average length of 6 millimeters and an average width of 2 millimeters. The flowers are small and clustered, purple and red white, ending in July. Its seeds are smaller than mustard seeds and all the parts of this plant are fragrant. Different species of this plant have been identified in different parts of Iran.

Chemical Constituents

Dried leaves and flower tops yield 1-2.5% of a volatile oil, 25-40% of which is constituted by thymol. Minor quantities of carvacrol, p-cymene, lborneol, linalool, etc., occur in the oil along with thymol. The leaves also contain gums, resins and tannins.
